Primavera Porteña
I transcribed the version of Piazzolla’s primavera porteña played by Color tango.I find this version arranged by Roberto Alvarez, it is interesting and catchy as the groove is so exciting. I also made an electronic backing track first to help the musicians feel the rhythm while recording but also with the idea of further producing the music afterwards. The electronic rhythm based on tango “tres tres dos” and sub division on the 8th note, also reflecting on the melodies. After recording, I edited and produced the sounds, adding some electronic treatments to create my own sonic version of the piece while borrowing elements of modern beat based music such as The Gotan project.
influences
The Tango tradition was revolutionized by Astor Piazzolla who created the Nuevo Tango. He combined new elements borrowed from jazz and contemporary music, refreshing the sound and the groove of this established tradition. Later on, with the rise of electronic club in the 1990s, Musicians started exploring and expanding the tango expression. The Gotan project for example incorporated new electronic elements into the tango. My arrangement takes inspiration from this, continuing the innovative ideas of Piazzolla and the people who followed him to create my own ‘electronic’ version of the tango.

I composed this piece to portray a city scene taking place in the early morning. I pictured an early sunrise scene in the city as the world starts waking up. I wrote the score first, then created the rhythms and tempo mapping in LOGIC to map out the piece and prepare the recording. I start the melody on the guitar and then give it to other instruments. In the beginning I used samples of alarms, construction sites , birds and car horns to project the urban picture I had in mind with its clocklike mechanical rhythms. I was inspired by Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint with its shifting modal colours. I like the idea of using samples and a minimal set of melodic notes repeating, creating illusions through sound as the tones gradually change as the music progresses.
This piece is also based on my own experiments playing with modes. Every mode has its own color which evoke different sets of moods and tones . The composer P. Hindemith organises musical mode from the brightest to darkest.

I use the method of P. Hindemith to help me write music. For this piece, I chose the lydian mode which provides the brightsound I was after to convey the atmosphere of the morning through music.
