Music Gallery

These short pieces were inspired by city scenes. Every one of those sketches are created through improvisations based on specific pictures and aspects of city life. I focused on various musical concepts and parameters such as the use of modes or intervallic relationships, rhythm and also sometimes exploring technologies, using sampling techniques and the use of digital effects( Delay, Reverb)

Lost Connection

This piece started from video materials I filmed. I  edited some video along with  some audio samples and then invited my friend Boeing to play synthesizer along with the track. During the pandemic, we all have to be separated  from each other and I feel like we’re all in   different environments , different spaces trying to connect somehow. The synth recording is cutting out as we are recording together via sonobus, an online jamming platform.

Broken Train

For this short industrial “noise” piece, I sampled street sounds, the bts and other noises.I wanted to make music entirely with sampled sounds. I created a rhythm track and replaced all the sounds with city sounds I collected.

HIGH RISE

This improvisation is based on a picture I had in my mind of massive high-rise buildings. I find the Urban designs humans choose to build both scary and incredible at the same time. Here, I use the Lydian dominant mode which has a feeling of mystery and light. This short piece is totally improvised while trying to project this idea of city buildings.

Empty city

During the pandemic, most  cities around the world were changed. Less people travel means less traffic...  Our crowded cities become empty cities.  . In this piece,  I use only an M7 interval  and space. The idea comes from the Esordio section of Ginastera’s sonata for guitar

Bang Yi Khan

I used a melodica recorded by my friend, then I added  reverb and delay to make the sound wider like in the video. It's like when we look down to the city.

Sunshine on the roof

This piece uses a bass movement gradually  descending chromatically. I use chords that I like and improvise arpeggios. I recorded this in my room which is near a big tree where many birds sing all day. I opened my window and recorded directly with the birds. It is great to bring this  environment into the music. It represents a normal day in a city and the music is very warm and wide.

FAST WALK

In this sketch- study, I mainly use major and minor second intervals along with open strings in a rhythmic style reminiscent of Leo Brouwer. The dissonant percussive  intervals I use represent a scene of crowded people walking fast in the city. I edited a video out of archival materials showing the routines of people in our modern cities.

NOISE

Here, I sampled with guitar sounds, using palm mutes and accents .I panned each track to individual locations in the stereo field ( Left, Centre, Right ) to make them sounds like 3 events in different places are happening at the same time.

All of those experiments help me project thel ideas and pictures in my mind into a piece of music within a short time. I like the focus on trying to come up with a musical message in a spontaneous manner like this. This also helps me understand how music works with pictures and how to  picture music.
